Champions Crowned at I-90 Karting Speedway

The 2009 points season started in May and wrapped up this past weekend as champions were crowned in seven classes.  Drivers from Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota participated weekly in the racing events, averaging over 50 karts per event.  Drivers claiming points titles include Levi Bulfer from Fairmont, Javen Ostermann of Courtland, Nate Brehmer from New Ulm, Logan Swanson from Heron Lake, Jesse Allen from Kasota, and Tony Wayne of Albert Lea.

Levi Bulfer from Fairmont was one of the drivers pulling double duty, competing in two classes at each racing event.  He started his evenings racing in the Jr. Sportsmen division where he competed against eighteen different drivers throughout the season.  Bulfer used his experience and talent to achieve consistent finishes building his point lead up and locking up the championship before the final night of competition.  Bulfer also competed in the Junior I Animal class.  There were eight drivers that competed in that class including regulars Collin Christenson and Lucas Jacobson.  By finishing the season with three perfect shows, Bulfer earned his second point title in the 2009 season.

Javen Ostemann from Courtland succeeded in taking the Junior I title after losing it by only a handful of points in 2008.  Ostermann raced his way to three feature wins and three-second place finishes en route to taking the point championship over Lucas Jacobson, Ethan Rabenhorst, Bryan Brandt and Blaney Markman.

Nate Brehmer from New Ulm topped the Junior II field with his consistent runs over fifteen different drivers, including six drivers that were on hand for all the shows.  Brehmer claimed five feature victories including two perfect nights, winning both flights and the feature event.

Heron Lake Driver, Logan Swanson, drove his way to the Junior II Animal title over Derek Steen.  The two Jackson County drivers had perfect attendance winning all but one of the feature events this season.  Swanson claimed six of the victories, which allowed his lead in the points to gradually grow.  Swanson ended the season with three perfect shows and three shows where he lost only one point from the perfect 100.

Tony Wayne of Albert Lea showed how consistent attendance could capture a title as he made all the shows, unlike his competitors and easily took the championship.  Wayne took all the feature events except for two along the way to the title.

The largest class on a weekly basis was the Stock Medium adult class.  Twenty-six drivers competed throughout the season. Taking feature wins were Jesse Allen with two, Ryan Vetter had one, Jason Vetter had two, Zach Drahota in his first season after a dominating season in the Junior II in 2008 claimed one, Caci Barfknecht with one, and Brian Wanarka claimed one feature event.  With his consistant runs, Allen topped the field winning the point championship by only eleven points over Wanarka.  The rest of the top five include Drahota, Barfknecht, and Ann Harms.

With the point season wrapping up, the drivers set their sights on the Fall Classic to be held on September 26.  A huge success in the past years with nearly 100 karts, the local champions look to claim wins in the annual classic event.
